You don’t like the shape of your ears or they look out of proportion due to some sort of birth defect, otoplasty has the complete solution to every sort of ear problem. The great aspect of otoplasty is that it doesn’t change the shape of your ear temporarily or artificially. It is completely natural. When you are done with the procedure, your ears will look completely normal.
WHY DO YOU NEED OTOPLASTY?
You require otoplasty if your ears are standing out from either side of your face, are extremely large in proportion to your head or your feel that they make your face seem ugly. For the purpose of having an otoplasty, you must be leading a healthy life and there must not be any sort of infection in your ears.
THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND BEFORE OPTING FOR THE OTOPLASTY SURGERY
Before you decide on when to have the otoplasty, there are certain things that you should keep in your mind. When you will have your first meeting with one of our best cosmetic surgeons, he will take down your medical history in detail. Next, he will ask you regarding your expectations of the otoplasty surgery. While taking down the history, he will also ask whether you are allergic to any drug or have any sort of medical treatment in the past. He will then inform you about the risks that you might encounter while going through the otoplasty surgery or possibly after having the surgery. Further, he will capture images of your ears and prepare digital designs about how they will look after the surgery.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES OF OTOPLASTY SURGERY
Before you go for the surgery, you must stop smoking as it could cause complications during the surgery. You must also avoid taking aspirin as it could cause prolonged bleeding and can cause complications in your healing process. While discussing your otoplasty surgery options with your surgeon, you must also ask for the type of anaesthesia that will be suitable for you. As otoplasty is not a complicated procedure so it might be over in a single session. However, you must keep in mind to arrange a ride back home because you would not be able to operate heavy machinery for some time.
DURING AND AFTER THE OTOPLASTY
You will be provided with anaesthesia and then your cosmetic surgeon will make an incision depending on the type of surgery you require. Incisions made during the otoplasty are not subtle. The surgeon will either make them in the back of your ears or within the folds of your ears. You will immediately get to see the results of your otoplasty. However, it will take you almost a week or two to heal completely from the surgery.
PROCEDURE
The otoplasty operation consists of reshaping the cartilage of the ear, occasionally removing some cartilage, and placement of the ears in proper relationship to the face and head. It produces generally good cosmetic results. Even when results are occasionally imperfect, it is usually possible to make revisions successfully.
The operation is carried out under either local or general anesthesia depending on the age and preference of the patient. There is relatively little pain associated with otoplasty and recovery is rapid. The incisions are made behind the ear where they are not noticeable. Absorbable sutures are used, making suture removal unnecessary.
A wraparound bandage is worn for a few days to protect the ears, and is worn at night until healing is complete. Most adult patients can return to work within a few days of surgery and children can return to school within a week. Trauma to the ears must be avoided for several weeks until healing is complete, and so a protective wrap is advisable during vigorous activity for at least three weeks.
Complications are uncommon. The major risk is postoperative bleeding. If this occurs, prompt treatment is required to prevent infection or abnormal scarring which can lead to thickening of the ear. Absolute symmetry of the ears is a goal that is rarely achieved. However, it is natural for the two ears to be slightly different in shape or position. Occasionally, after healing, the position of the
